Single Window Approval

Steps Underway to Establish a Single Window Approval Mechanism for Sri Lanka’s Film Tourism Industry

A high-level discussion on the establishment of a Single Window Approval Mechanism for Sri Lanka’s film tourism industry was held at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of the Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

The proposed mechanism is being introduced in line with a decision taken by the Presidential Task Force established to implement Sri Lanka’s Tourism Development Programme. It is expected to create a more investor-friendly environment while enhancing the country’s competitiveness as a destination for international film and audiovisual productions.

OVERCOMING CURRENT CHALLENGES

During the discussion, it was noted that foreign producers seeking approval to film feature films, documentaries, television productions, commercials, music videos, and other audiovisual content in Sri Lanka are currently required to obtain clearances from multiple government agencies. This has resulted in a lengthy and complex approval process, creating challenges for international productions.

Accordingly, extensive discussions were held on the framework required to establish a streamlined Single Window Approval Mechanism, enabling applicants to obtain all necessary approvals through a coordinated and efficient process.

Key Focus Areas of the Implementation Roadmap:
Reaching multi-agency consensus • Identifying potential deployment challenges • Strengthening inter-agency operational coordination • Formulating practical administrative solutions • Establishing an explicit enforcement timeline.

STRATEGIC & ECONOMIC IMPACT

The successful implementation of the Single Window Approval Mechanism is expected to position Sri Lanka as a preferred destination for international film and audiovisual productions while enhancing the competitiveness of the country’s film industry.
