Sri Lanka–Iran Cinematic Relations Enter a New Era
The Chairman of the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka, Mr. Sudath Mahadivulwewa, recently held an official discussion with Mr. Ali Kebriaei Zadeh, Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, at the Iranian Cultural Centre.
This discussion followed the Chairman’s recent official visit to Shiraz, Iran, where he represented Sri Lanka at the 43rd Fajr International Film Festival (FIFF). The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cinematic and cultural cooperation between Sri Lanka and Iran.
Key areas of discussion included the commercial screening of Oscar-nominated Iranian films in Sri Lanka, potential collaboration with the proposed Colombo International Film Festival—covering funding support and curated film packages—as well as future technical and educational cooperation with the National Film Corporation Film School. Opportunities for co- productions between the two countries were also explored.
Mr. Alireza Shahini, Coordinator and Translator at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, also participated in the discussion.
This engagement marks a significant step toward enhancing cultural exchange and expanding collaborative opportunities within the film industries of Sri Lanka and Iran.
